Chapter 18 - The Woman Wearing My Mother’s Name

The hotel room contained women’s clothing, trust documents, and photographs from my childhood.
At first, I feared someone had constructed a fake identity.
Then police found fingerprints.
They belonged to Diane Mercer.
Evelyn’s estranged younger sister.
Julian had told me Diane died years ago.
Another family death that was not real.
Diane had worked for Martin Hale before disappearing from public records.
She specialized in corporate compliance and knew how to create legal identities using deceased clients’ documents.
After Mom died, Diane began using her information to access old accounts and communicate with trust administrators.
She became Margaret Bennett on paper.
That was how Evelyn received confidential updates even after Martin’s arrest.
Diane was found in a rented cottage near the Canadian border.
Inside were forged birth certificates, passports, and a draft petition declaring me mentally incompetent.
She had also prepared documents naming “Margaret Bennett” as Lily’s emergency guardian.
The plan was audacious.
My dead mother would appear legally alive through corrupted databases long enough to transfer Lily and freeze the trust.
When arrested, Diane asked to speak with me.
Against Rachel’s advice, I agreed through protective glass.
“Your mother ruined Evelyn’s life,” Diane said.
“No. Evelyn ruined her own.”
“You don’t understand what your family had.”
“Money?”
“Power.”
I leaned closer.
“My mother used power to protect people. Evelyn used it to own them.”
Diane smiled.
“Then ask why your mother changed the trust six months before she died.”
I already knew Lily was the future beneficiary.
But Diane claimed there was another amendment.
One that removed Julian entirely and placed control with an independent guardian.
“Who was the guardian?” I asked.
Diane’s smile widened.
“Your sister.”
Chloe had been named in my mother’s final amendment.
Not as owner.
May you like
As protector.
