Chapter 12 - Julian’s Second Betrayal

Chloe recorded Julian two months after Mom’s death.
His voice was quiet.
“I saw her hand on your mother’s shoulder. Mom shoved her away. She lost her balance.”
Chloe asked, “Why didn’t you tell Clara?”
“Because she would leave me.”
That sentence hurt more than any excuse.
He had hidden the truth not from fear of Evelyn, but because he wanted to keep me useful.
He let me mourn beside him.
He held me at Mom’s funeral.
He watched me blame myself for not visiting that evening.
All while knowing exactly how she died.
Prosecutors added charges of obstruction and accessory after the fact.
Julian requested a plea agreement.
He offered full testimony against Evelyn and Martin Hale.
In exchange, he wanted prosecutors to recommend leniency and allow him future visitation with Lily.
Rachel made one thing clear.
“Criminal prosecutors cannot promise custody rights.”
Julian’s attorney contacted me anyway.
“He wants you to support supervised visitation.”
“The baby isn’t born.”
“He is trying to take responsibility.”
“No. He is trying to negotiate with consequences.”
I refused.
Martin Hale was arrested at a private airfield in Nevada.
He carried a forged passport, $180,000 in cash, and copies of my mother’s trust.
Under questioning, he blamed Evelyn.
Evelyn blamed Julian.
Julian blamed debt.
The conspiracy was unraveling because none of them had loyalty when freedom was at stake.
Then doctors admitted Chloe to the hospital.
She had severe preeclampsia.
Lily might need to be delivered six weeks early.
Chloe called me from her hospital bed.
“I need you here.”
I drove through the night.
When I arrived, she handed me a medical power-of-attorney form.
“If something happens to me, protect her.”
For the first time, she was not asking for money, forgiveness, or ownership.

She was asking me to be Lily’s mother.
