Chapter 10 - Dale’s Warning

Dale was fifty-five, broad-shouldered, and dressed in a dark company jacket.
He entered carrying a gasoline container.
Rebecca switched on the lights.
Dale froze.
“What are you doing here?”
Rebecca looked at the container.
“What are you doing?”
Dale recovered quickly.
“Your father asked me to clear old equipment.”
“With gasoline?”
“It’s for the generator.”
Walter glanced toward the corner.
The generator had been removed years earlier.
Rebecca held up a strand of Grace’s fur.
“She was kept here.”
Dale stared at it.
Then his eyes moved toward the breeding records.
“You shouldn’t have come.”
“Did you take my dog?”
“No.”
“Who did?”
Dale stepped closer.
Walter moved between them.
Dale laughed.
“You think this concerns you, old man?”
Walter did not move.
“I found her tied to a pole.”
Dale’s expression changed.
“You should have left her there.”
Rebecca raised her phone.
“Say that again.”
Dale lunged toward it.
Walter caught his forearm.
For a moment, the two men struggled.
