Chapter 26 - The Roadside Memorial

Hannah and Mike Turner returned to Old Mill Road in spring.

They had been the bystanders who helped lift Grace into the pickup.

Together with Walter and Rebecca, they cleaned the area around the utility pole.

They removed trash.

Filled the deepest puddles.

Placed a small weatherproof box containing emergency blankets, slip leads, and the local rescue number.

They did not create a sad memorial.

Grace was alive.

So were her puppies.

Instead, they planted four young trees.

One for Grace.

One for Millie.

One for Jack.

One for Rudy.

Grace sniffed each tree and then lay beneath the smallest.

Walter sat beside her.

The rope scar remained visible, but pale new fur had begun growing across it.
