Chapter 20 - The Man in the Fire

Dale blamed Walter for ruining everything.

“You should have minded your business.”

Walter lifted the trapped dog.

“You keep saying that.”

Dale stepped closer.

Flames spread across the rafters.

Walter placed the dog behind him.

Dale raised the bar.

Before he could swing, a stream of water struck him from the side.

Rebecca stood outside holding a fire hose connected to a construction tank.

Dale lost his footing.

Walter pushed the dog toward the doorway.

Police arrived seconds later.

Dale ran deeper into the yard.

He climbed into the white pickup and attempted to escape.

The tires spun in mud.

Officers surrounded the vehicle.

Dale was arrested as the barn roof collapsed behind him.

Walter sat in the rain with the rescued dog against his chest.

Rebecca knelt beside him.

“Are you hurt?”

Walter shook his head.

Then he noticed blood on his sleeve.

It was not his.
