Walter heard barking after midnight.
He stepped onto his porch with a flashlight.
The sound came from beyond the trees.
His property bordered the old Whitmore equipment yard.
He called police.
Then he saw flames.
A wooden barn had caught fire.
Walter knew animals could be inside.
Dispatch ordered him to remain home.
He ignored the instruction.
At the yard, smoke poured through gaps in the siding.
Dogs barked frantically.
Walter found the side door chained.
He used an axe from his pickup.
One strike.
Two.
The chain broke.
He opened the door and released four dogs into the rain.
A fifth remained trapped beneath a collapsed shelf.
