Chapter 30 - The Family That Stayed

One year after the freezing rain, Walter drove down Old Mill Road again.
The white pickup moved slowly past the utility pole.
Grace sat beside him.
Millie and Jack had been adopted together by Hannah and Mike Turner.
They lived only ten minutes away and visited every weekend.
Rudy remained with Walter.
He slept behind the front seat wrapped in the same wool blanket.
Rebecca followed in another vehicle carrying supplies for Grace Road Rescue.
The organization had saved more than eighty animals.
Charles, after completing his sentence, donated land anonymously.
Rebecca discovered the donation but did not publicly name him.
It was not forgiveness.
It was one responsible act.
At the roadside trees, Walter opened the truck door.
Grace jumped down.
She walked directly to the pole where she had once been tied.
Rudy followed.
For a moment, Grace stood completely still.
Then she turned away from the pole and ran toward the open field.
Rudy chased her through the spring grass.
Walter watched them disappear between the young trees before circling back toward him.
Grace could have kept running.
She was free.
Instead, she returned and pressed her muddy head against Walter’s knee.
The day he cut the rope, everyone asked why she refused to escape.
Now Walter knew the answer.
Grace had never been waiting for freedom for herself.
She had been waiting for someone who understood that her family had to be saved together.
Walter opened the pickup door.
Grace climbed inside beside Rudy.
“Then we all go,” he whispered.

And this time, they went home.
Would you have taken only the weakest puppy to safety first, or refused to leave until the entire family could go together?
