Chapter 13 - The Puppy Without a Name

Back at the clinic, the smallest puppy worsened.
Fluid remained in his lungs.
His temperature dropped again.
Elena placed him on oxygen.
Grace refused food unless her bed was moved near the incubator.
Rebecca sat beside her.
Walter stood at the window.
He had intended to go home hours earlier.
Instead, he watched the tiny chest rise and fall.
Elena told them the puppy needed a blood transfusion.
Grace was too weak to donate.
The clinic contacted nearby owners.
A retired police dog named Duke was compatible.
His handler drove through the storm.
The transfusion began near midnight.
Walter remained beside the incubator.
Rebecca asked why he had not left.
He shrugged.
“Someone should be here when he wakes up.”
“And if he doesn’t?”
May you like
Walter’s eyes stayed on the puppy.
“Then someone should be here for that too.”
