Chapter 8 - The Locked Gravel Yard

Rebecca called her father from the clinic.

Charles answered warmly until she mentioned the gravel yard.

“That property has been empty for years.”

“I found Grace nearby.”

Silence.

“Bring her home,” Charles said.

“She has puppies.”

Another pause.

“What kind?”

Rebecca’s expression changed.

“Why does that matter?”

“It doesn’t. I’m surprised.”

“Did Dale use the gravel yard?”

“Not that I know.”

“I’m going there.”

Charles’s voice hardened.

“No.”

Rebecca ended the call.

Walter offered to drive.

The rain weakened by late afternoon.

They left Grace and the puppies with Elena and headed toward the old property.

The entrance gate was chained.

Fresh mud covered the access road.

Someone had driven inside recently.

Walter examined the chain.

The padlock was new.

Rebecca used an emergency company key.

The lock opened.

Beyond the gate stood three blue storage buildings and an abandoned office trailer.
