Chapter 28 - Grace Learns to Trust Again

Grace remained afraid of rope.

Even a garden hose made her retreat.

Walter never pulled her forward.

He sat near the object and waited.

Over months, Grace learned that collars could mean walks instead of confinement.

Car doors could open toward safety.

Human hands could carry puppies without stealing them.

She still checked every room whenever Rudy cried.

She slept between the puppies and the front door.

But one summer afternoon, she followed Walter into the yard and lay in the sun.

No fence pressed against her.

No rope tightened.

She closed her eyes.

Walter watched from the porch.

It was the first time he had seen her sleep without remaining alert.
