Chapter 22 - Grace Goes Home
Elena released Grace from the clinic after two weeks.
Rebecca expected to bring her back to the Whitmore estate.
Grace refused to enter Rebecca’s SUV.
She pulled toward Walter’s pickup.
Rebecca tried again gently.
Grace flattened herself beside Walter’s boots.
Walter knelt.
“She remembers my truck.”
Rebecca looked hurt but understood.
The estate contained the service road from which Grace had been taken.
Returning could trigger fear.
Walter agreed to foster the family temporarily.
At his house, Grace inspected every room.
She chose the corner beside the kitchen stove.
The two stronger puppies followed.
The smallest slept inside Ruth’s blanket near Walter’s chair.
That night, Walter woke to find Grace standing beside his bed.
