Chapter 15 - Dale Disappears
Police went to arrest Dale the next morning.
His house was empty.
His SUV had been abandoned near the state line.
Inside, officers found veterinary medication, forged shelter forms, and photographs of dogs.
One photograph showed Grace in a concrete kennel with a large brindle male dog.
Another showed the three puppies shortly after birth.
A note on the back listed a buyer and price.
Dale had planned to sell the two stronger puppies.
The smallest was marked with a black X.
Walter stared at the photograph.
“What does the X mean?”
Elena did not answer immediately.
It meant the puppy had been considered worthless.
Rebecca took the photograph.
“He knew this one was sick.”
