Chapter 14 - Ruth’s Blanket

The wool blanket around the puppy had belonged to Walter’s wife.

Ruth kept it behind the pickup seat for winter emergencies.

She used it during their last road trip before cancer took away her strength.

Walter had not unfolded it in five years.

When he wrapped the puppy inside it, he did not think about the memory.

He thought only about warmth.

At dawn, the puppy opened his mouth and released a tiny sound.

Walter leaned closer.

The puppy’s eyes remained closed, but his breathing strengthened.

Elena smiled.

“He’s fighting.”

Walter looked at Ruth’s blanket.

“For Ruth,” he whispered.

Rebecca heard him.

“Is that his name?”

Walter shook his head.

May you like

“No names yet.”

But when the puppy’s paw curled around his finger, the promise had already been made.
