Chapter 5 - The Whitmore Name

Walter knew the Whitmore family.
Everyone did.
The Whitmore Foundation funded the new children’s library.
Their company repaired bridges and county roads.
Rebecca Whitmore’s father, Charles, had recently announced a campaign to build an animal shelter.
Elena called the number registered to Grace’s chip.
A woman answered immediately.
When Elena said Grace had been found alive, the woman began crying.
“Where is she?”
“Brooks Veterinary Clinic.”
“I’m coming.”
Thirty minutes later, Rebecca entered wearing work boots and a raincoat.
She was thirty-two, with red hair tied behind her head and mud on her jeans.
Grace lifted her head.
For one second, neither moved.
Then Grace ran.
Rebecca dropped to her knees as the dog pressed against her chest.
“You’re alive.”
Grace licked her face and whined.
Rebecca held her until she noticed the puppies.
Her joy changed to confusion.
“She wasn’t pregnant when she disappeared.”
Walter watched her carefully.
“Who took her?”
Rebecca looked toward the clinic door.
“My father said she escaped during a storm.”

“Did you believe him?”
Rebecca did not answer.
