Chapter 1 - THE KNOCKING

“Dad! I found Mom’s necklace in Vanessa’s clothes!”
Lily came running down the polished hallway so fast one white shoe nearly slipped off her foot.
My two-year-old daughter lifted a silver chain in both hands.
Claire’s necklace.
The tiny crescent pendant swung beneath Lily’s trembling fingers while music from the wedding reception drifted through the open doors behind us.
I stopped breathing.
Vanessa stood six feet away in her white wedding dress.
She didn’t gasp.
She didn’t ask where Lily had found it.
She simply stepped toward me, placed one hand against my sleeve, and said, “Claire gave it to me before she left.”
Lily shook her head immediately.
“Mom would never leave me!”
Her voice cracked.
I looked from the necklace to Vanessa.
Six days earlier, Claire had vanished after dropping Lily at my villa. Her phone had later pinged near the airport. A message from her number told me she needed time away.
I had wanted to believe it.
Maybe because believing Claire had left voluntarily was easier than admitting something was wrong.
“Enough, Lily,” I said.
The second the words left my mouth, I hated them.
My daughter’s face collapsed.
She turned away from me and walked down the hallway alone.
Then came three knocks.
Not from a door.
From underneath Lily’s feet.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
Lily froze.
Vanessa’s hand tightened around my arm.
Two more knocks came from beneath the oak floorboards.
I stared down.
This villa had belonged to my grandfather. I knew there were old service passages beneath parts of the house, but most had supposedly been sealed during renovations.
Lily dropped to her knees.
She pressed her ear against the wood.
“Mommy?”
For one terrible second, nothing happened.
Then three knocks answered.
Lily jerked upright.
I looked at Vanessa.
The color had drained from her face.
That was the moment everything changed.
Not because of the sound.
Because Vanessa recognized it.
I saw recognition before fear covered it.
“Daniel,” she whispered, “it’s probably a pipe.”
One loud удар hammered from underneath us.
Vanessa flinched backward.
I grabbed Lily and lifted her against my chest.
“Ryan!” I shouted toward the ballroom.
My brother appeared in the doorway, still wearing his best-man tuxedo.
“What happened?”
I pointed to the floor.
“Get everyone out of this hallway.”
Vanessa stepped between us.
“You’re destroying our wedding because a toddler heard plumbing?”
I stared at the woman I had been seconds away from marrying.
Then I looked at Claire’s necklace in Lily’s fist.
“No,” I said.
“I’m stopping our wedding because you lied about that necklace.”
Vanessa’s expression hardened for only half a second.
Then she smiled.
And began slowly backing toward the front door.
I handed Lily to Ryan.
“Don’t let Vanessa leave.”
The smile disappeared.

Vanessa turned and ran.
📖 I thought stopping the wedding was the hardest decision I would make that day, until the floor beneath my daughter moved. 👇
