Chapter 19 - VANESSA’S VERSION
Vanessa’s attorney requested a bail hearing.
The prosecutor argued she was a flight risk.
Her attorney argued she had surrendered voluntarily.
The judge imposed strict conditions, electronic monitoring and travel restrictions.
Claire hated that she was released.
I did too.
But legal systems were not built around what frightened us.
They were built around what could be proven.
Vanessa walked out of court without looking at me.
Then her defense team released selected documents.
Margaret’s signed investment authorization.
My electronic approval.
Graham’s notarizations.
Ryan’s access card.
Mason’s security credentials.
Their argument was simple.
Vanessa did not control Bennett systems.
Bennetts did.
She claimed she had merely followed instructions.
Then came an audio recording.
Claire’s voice.
“If you marry Daniel, I will destroy you.”
Reporters played it everywhere.
Claire listened once.
“That happened.”
I looked at her.
“What?”
“I said it.”
“When?”
“The day I confronted her.”
Vanessa’s defense had found a real sentence.
That made it dangerous.
Claire continued.
“I said, ‘If you marry Daniel while stealing from Lily, I will destroy everything you built around this lie.’”
The released clip stopped after six words.
Another selective edit.
But public opinion did not wait for forensic audio analysis.
Claire became the jealous ex-wife.
I became the reckless executive.
Margaret became the careless trustee.
Vanessa became the woman trapped inside a dysfunctional wealthy family.
It was smart.
Because parts were true.
We had been dysfunctional.
We had ignored warning signs.
We had signed without checking.
We had hurt one another long before Vanessa arrived.
She was using truth as camouflage for crime.
Then she made her strongest move.
Her attorney produced a sworn statement from Graham.
It said Margaret personally instructed him to draft the beneficiary amendment.
Margaret stared at the statement.
“That’s a lie.”
“Can you prove it?” I asked.
Her silence answered.
Graham had stopped cooperating with us.
The man who knew where every document came from had chosen Vanessa’s side.
Claire studied the affidavit.
“Why now?”
“Because he’s protecting himself.”
“No.”
She tapped the final page.
“Look.”
Graham’s signature was dated yesterday.
But the notary block used an old office seal.
One Graham had stopped using months ago.
We called Brooks.
She examined the document.
Then she smiled for the first time in days.
“If this affidavit was created yesterday, somebody made a mistake.”
The defense had presented a document meant to prove Margaret lied.
Instead, it might prove someone was still forging Graham Pike’s paperwork.
