Chapter 16 - THE THING CLAIRE COULDN’T FORGET

Claire read the message without speaking.

Keep Claire downstairs until after the ceremony.

I watched her face.

“Claire, I didn’t send that.”

“I know what it says.”

“I didn’t send it.”

She looked at me.

“That isn’t the same thing.”

The distinction hurt because she was right.

She had spent six days locked beneath my house while I prepared to marry the woman responsible.

Trust was not something I could demand because I felt innocent.

Detective Brooks asked Claire whether I had ever threatened to restrict her access to Lily.

“Yes.”

My chest tightened.

Claire continued.

“During our custody fight two years ago.”

Brooks wrote it down.

I hated hearing my worst moments turned into context for a crime I had not committed.

But truth was truth.

Then Claire added, “He also withdrew the threat the next morning and apologized in writing.”

Brooks looked up.

“You kept that?”

“I keep everything involving Lily.”

Claire opened an old email archive.

There was my apology.

There were also dozens of messages proving our co-parenting had been stable for more than a year.

Evidence did not erase my mistake.

It gave the mistake proportion.

Digital investigators found the stronger answer later.

The message to Mason had been sent through my cloud account.

But the authentication certificate had been exported from my spare phone three weeks earlier.

The night Vanessa borrowed it.

The originating network was not mine.

It belonged to a hotel where Vanessa stayed during wedding preparations.

The planted evidence started to collapse.

Then came something better.

The message contained a formatting signature from an automation app.

Vanessa used the same app for wedding-vendor messages.

Her account had created the template.

Not proof she pressed send.

But another link.

Claire sat beside me after Brooks left.

“I believe you didn’t send it.”

I closed my eyes.

I had not realized how badly I needed to hear that.

Then she said, “That doesn’t mean we’re okay.”

“I know.”

“For years, you assumed problems disappeared if you could explain them.”

I looked at her.

“I’m learning.”

“You’re learning because Lily heard me through a floor.”

There was no answer to that.

The next morning, I formally resigned as CEO instead of remaining on temporary leave.

Ryan tried to stop me.

I refused.

“As long as Vanessa can use the company as leverage, I’m giving her leverage.”

It was the first decision I made that reduced my control rather than protecting it.

An hour after the announcement became public, Mason called Detective Brooks.

He was ready to cooperate fully.

He gave one condition.

He wanted witness protection from Vanessa.

And he finally told police where she had hidden the backup drive.

Inside the villa.

📖 Giving up my company weakened Vanessa’s strongest weapon, but Mason’s hidden drive would reveal that her fraud reached much further than Lily’s trust. 👇
