Chapter 14 - THE DEADLINE

We rebuilt Vanessa’s timeline around the wedding date.
Not around our relationship.
That changed everything.
The $2.4 million transfer was scheduled to clear the morning after the ceremony.
The trust amendment was drafted to become effective upon my marriage.
A corporate life-insurance beneficiary update had been created but not submitted.
And an $11.8 million line of credit had been prepared against the villa and two Bennett properties.
My signature appeared on all three.
I had signed none.
Claire read each document at my dining table.
“She needed everything to look normal until the wedding.”
Detective Brooks nodded.
“A bride stealing before the ceremony raises questions. A wife reorganizing family finances afterward looks different.”
Vanessa intended to gain legitimacy first.
Then move fast.
But one piece still did not fit.
If she planned to disappear with money, why keep Claire alive beneath the house?
Claire answered that.
“Because she needed passwords.”
I looked at her.
“She asked me about the trust portal while I was down there.”
My hands went cold.
“You remember?”
“Bits of it.”
Vanessa had come into the room twice.
Once with water.
Once with Claire’s phone.
She demanded access to the beneficiary notification system.
Claire refused.
Vanessa told her Lily would eventually forget her.
Claire’s voice shook when she said it.
I wanted to reach for her.
I didn’t.
She deserved control over every inch of space around her.
“What stopped Vanessa from killing you?” Brooks asked gently.
Claire stared at the floor.
“She said dead people create investigations.”
That sentence silenced the room.
Vanessa’s intelligence was what made her dangerous.
She did not want chaos.
She wanted paperwork.
Administrative mistakes.
Family conflict.
Digital signatures.
A missing woman who appeared to leave voluntarily.
By evening, prosecutors had enough to seek broader search warrants.
They found Vanessa’s rental SUV abandoned near a bus terminal.
No Vanessa.
But inside the glove compartment was a prepaid phone.
One unsent draft message remained.
Mason knows too much. Graham can still be controlled. Daniel will blame Ryan before he blames himself.
Ryan read it twice.
Then he looked at me.
“She knew exactly how we worked.”
He was right.
Vanessa had not created our fractures.
She had mapped them.
Then Brooks received another result.
The prepaid phone contained photographs of my office, Margaret’s study, Claire’s house and Lily’s preschool.
The most recent photograph had been taken three weeks earlier.
Lily entering through the school gate.

My daughter had been part of Vanessa’s surveillance long before Claire disappeared.
