Chapter 5 - THE $2.4 MILLION TRANSFER

By sunrise, our family attorney, Graham Pike, was sitting across from me in the hospital cafeteria.

He had represented the Bennetts for twenty-three years.

Gray suit.

Perfect tie.

Hands that never seemed to shake.

Until I told him what Claire had said.

“Freeze Lily’s trust.”

Graham blinked.

“On what basis?”

“Attempted fraud.”

“That’s a serious allegation.”

“So is kidnapping.”

He opened his laptop.

Lily’s trust had been created after my father died. Its principal was protected, but certain investment transfers could be authorized jointly by two trustees.

Margaret was one.

I was the other.

Graham stopped scrolling.

“What?”

I leaned over.

A transfer request had been submitted four days earlier.

$2.4 million.

Destination: VCC Holdings LLC.

“Who the hell is VCC Holdings?”

“I don’t know.”

The authorization showed Margaret Bennett.

And Daniel Bennett.

My name.

My electronic signature.

My authentication certificate.

I stared at it.

“I never approved this.”

Graham looked up sharply.

“The system says you did.”

“Then the system is wrong.”

He immediately called the bank and placed an emergency fraud hold on the transaction.

The money had not cleared yet.

That was our first real victory.

A small one.

If Claire had remained underground another twenty-four hours, $2.4 million might have disappeared.

I returned to her room.

She was awake.

Lily sat beside her, carefully touching the silver necklace now sealed inside an evidence bag on the table.

Claire noticed me.

“You found it?”

I nodded.

“VCC Holdings.”

Her eyes closed.

“That’s what I found.”

“How?”

“I received a trustee notice because Lily is the beneficiary.”

I frowned.

“You’re not a trustee.”

“No. But the trust agreement requires beneficiary-parent notification for transfers above two million while Lily is a minor.”

Graham had never mentioned that.

Neither had my mother.

Claire continued.

“I called Margaret. She told me it had to be a clerical error. Then Vanessa came to my house.”

“When?”

“The afternoon I disappeared.”

My jaw tightened.

“What did she say?”

“That I needed to stop digging.”

Claire looked at the evidence bag.

“She noticed the necklace because I kept touching it when I got nervous.”

The pendant had been Claire’s mother’s.

Vanessa had not received it as a gift.

She had taken it.

I wanted to apologize.

For Lily.

For believing the message.

For telling my daughter enough.

But before I could, the hospital door opened.

Margaret entered.

Claire’s face went cold.

My mother stopped three steps inside.

Claire pointed toward her.

“Ask her why her signature is on the transfer.”

Margaret looked at me.

Then at Claire.

And said, “Because I signed it.”

📖 My mother’s confession seemed to explain the stolen money, but the reason she gave would expose a second betrayal inside the Bennett family. 👇
