Chapter 21 - HER BROTHER’S CLINIC

Dr. Evan Carter ran a veterinary clinic forty minutes from the villa.
He did not run.
He did not destroy records.
When detectives arrived with a warrant, he handed over everything.
That mattered.
The medication lot number in Claire’s photograph matched inventory from his clinic.
Three vials were missing.
Evan looked genuinely horrified.
He admitted Vanessa had visited his clinic two months earlier.
She told him her dog was anxious during travel.
He refused to prescribe without examining the animal.
A week later, inventory showed a discrepancy.
He blamed a technician.
Now he understood.
“You’re telling me my sister stole this?”
Brooks answered, “We’re telling you the medication came from your clinic.”
Evan sat down.
For several minutes, he said nothing.
Then he opened an office drawer.
Inside was an old tablet.
“Vanessa used this when she visited.”
The device still contained a synced photo cache.
One picture showed Vanessa holding a clinic supply-room key.
Another showed a tray containing the same brand of sedative.
Not proof she took it.
But opportunity.
Then Evan did something none of us expected.
He gave police a voicemail Vanessa left him after Claire disappeared.
Her voice sounded controlled.
“If anyone asks, you haven’t seen me in weeks. Claire is creating problems again, and Daniel is going to need people who don’t panic.”
Evan never responded.
He assumed she was talking about wedding drama.
Now he looked sick.
“I should have called Daniel.”
I almost told him yes.
Then I remembered how many warnings I had ignored.
Blame was easy when it belonged to someone else.
“You didn’t know,” I said.
He looked at me.
“Neither did you?”
That question stayed with me.
Investigators traced the vial residue recovered from the hidden room.
Same medication family.
Claire’s hospital toxicology matched it.
The chain was still incomplete, but growing stronger.
Clinic.
Vanessa’s access.
Photograph.
Claire’s blood sample.
Hidden room.
Mason’s statement.
Graham’s messages.
No single piece solved everything.
Together, they formed structure.
That evening, prosecutors searched Vanessa’s temporary residence.
They found no medication.
But they found a handwritten legal pad.
Most pages were wedding notes.
Flowers.
Seating.
Vendors.
Then one page listed three dates.
Claire.
Margaret.
Daniel.
Beside Claire’s name: REMOVE BEFORE WEDDING.
Beside Margaret’s: AFTER.
Beside mine: SIGNATURE COMPLETE.
Brooks photographed the page.
Vanessa’s attorney immediately argued the words were ambiguous.
He was right.
Ambiguous evidence was not enough.
But underneath Daniel, one additional line had been written and crossed out.
ACCIDENT OPTION.
Claire stared at it.
