Chapter 11 - WHAT CLAIRE OVERHEARD
Claire left the hospital two days later.
She refused to return to her own house.
I didn’t blame her.
She and Lily moved into the villa’s upstairs guest suite while police continued processing the lower corridor.
I offered to leave.
Claire shook her head.
“Lily needs both of us where she can see us.”
That was not forgiveness.
I understood the difference.
That night, while Lily slept between us on the guest-room bed, Claire remembered something.
Not a complete memory.
Fragments.
She had gone to Graham’s office after receiving the trust notice.
Vanessa arrived while Claire was in the conference room.
Claire heard Vanessa speaking in the hallway.
“After the wedding, Daniel signs the new beneficiary structure.”
Another voice answered.
Graham.
“He’ll ask questions.”
“He won’t if Claire is gone.”
Claire had stepped into the hallway.
Both of them stopped talking.
Vanessa immediately smiled.
Graham left.
Claire confronted Vanessa.
“She told me I misunderstood.”
“What happened next?” I asked.
“She followed me home.”
The rest remained blurred.
I hated watching Claire fight through memory while knowing I had once dismissed her warnings as jealousy.
“I should have listened to you.”
Claire looked at Lily.
“Yes.”
No reassurance.
No softening.
Just truth.
The next morning, Detective Brooks brought financial investigators to the villa.
VCC Holdings had been formed eleven months earlier.
Its manager was a nominee service.
Its mailing address belonged to a corporate-registration company.
But the bank account used for the attempted transfer had one identifiable authorized contact.
Vanessa Carter.
That gave us motive.
Money.
But Claire shook her head.
“Two-point-four million isn’t enough.”
Brooks agreed.
“Why?”
“Because Vanessa talked about a beneficiary structure.”
I called the administrator of Lily’s trust.
After several hours and attorney verification, he confirmed an unsigned draft amendment had been uploaded three weeks earlier.
The amendment did not simply move investments.
It changed what would happen if I died before Lily turned twenty-five.
Currently, Claire would become Lily’s primary financial guardian.
The draft removed Claire.
It placed authority with my legal spouse.
After the wedding, that would have been Vanessa.
I felt physically ill.
Claire had not been kidnapped merely because she discovered theft.
She stood between Vanessa and long-term control of Lily’s money.
Then the administrator gave us the amount currently protected by the trust.
$18.7 million.
Lily slept upstairs holding a stuffed rabbit.
