Chapter 4 - THE DEPARTURE MESSAGE

Claire was taken to the hospital under police protection.

I stayed until doctors confirmed dehydration, a concussion and sedatives in her bloodstream, but no life-threatening injuries.

Then Detective Elena Brooks asked me for everything connected to Claire’s disappearance.

I gave her my phone.

The message from Claire had arrived six days earlier at 8:41 p.m.

I need space. Don’t call. Lily is safe with you. I’ll contact you when I’m ready.

I had read it fifty times.

Now it looked different.

Claire would never describe Lily as “safe with you.”

She would write “safe with her dad.”

Small difference.

Huge meaning.

Brooks requested the phone records while another detective searched the villa.

Vanessa’s wedding bags were still upstairs.

Her passport was gone.

So was her phone.

Mason remained in the house answering questions.

He claimed he had no idea Claire was underground.

Ryan didn’t believe him.

Neither did I.

At 2:13 a.m., Detective Brooks walked into the hospital waiting room holding a printed network log from my home-security company.

“The message sent from Claire’s account was routed through your villa’s Wi-Fi.”

I stared at her.

“Claire’s phone was supposedly near the airport.”

“Correct.”

“That’s forty minutes away.”

Brooks nodded.

“Which means either the location record was manipulated, or somebody had access to her messaging account from another device.”

I immediately thought of Vanessa.

Then Brooks placed a second page on the table.

“Your system records devices by hardware ID.”

One device had connected at 8:39 p.m.

Two minutes before Claire’s message was sent.

It belonged to a tablet registered to Vanessa Carter.

My chest tightened.

That was the first hard evidence.

Not proof of kidnapping.

Not enough for a conviction.

But proof Vanessa had lied.

I called Margaret.

“She didn’t leave voluntarily.”

My mother remained silent.

“Mom?”

“Daniel, you don’t know what happened.”

“She was found locked under my house.”

“And Vanessa may have panicked because she knew how this would look.”

I nearly laughed.

“How exactly should it look?”

Margaret lowered her voice.

“You’re emotional.”

“My daughter heard her mother knocking beneath the floor at my wedding.”

“I understand that.”

“No, you don’t.”

Then Margaret said something that made me stop.

“Before you accuse Vanessa of financial crimes, you need to understand that I gave her access to some Bennett family accounts.”

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What accounts?”

Another silence.

“Lily’s trust was one of them.”

I stood.

“You gave my fiancée access to my daughter’s money?”

“I gave her limited administrative authority.”

“When?”

“Three months ago.”

Claire had disappeared six days ago.

Vanessa’s plan had started long before that.

And my mother had opened the first door.

📖 My mother insisted she had only given Vanessa limited authority, until a frozen transfer showed exactly how expensive that trust had been. 👇
