Chapter 6 - MY MOTHER’S SIGNATURE

“You signed it?”
Margaret didn’t sit.
She remained beside the door like she might need to defend herself physically.
“I approved a portfolio restructuring.”
Claire laughed once.
There was no humor in it.
“For a two-year-old?”
Margaret ignored her.
She looked at me.
“Vanessa showed me projections. The trust was underperforming.”
“So you authorized $2.4 million to a company none of us had heard of?”
“I believed it was one of the investment vehicles.”
“You didn’t check?”
Her mouth tightened.
That answer was worse than yes.
Margaret Bennett checked restaurant receipts after charity dinners.
She questioned contractor invoices down to the last fixture.
She did not casually move millions.
Claire saw my expression.
“That isn’t all she’s hiding.”
Margaret turned toward her.
“You’ve done enough.”
Claire pushed herself upright despite the IV line in her arm.
“I almost died under your son’s floor.”
“And somehow you’re still making this about money.”
“It became about money when Vanessa locked me underground to protect a theft.”
I stepped between them.
“Mom. What did Vanessa have on you?”
Margaret went still.
That was the answer.
I waited.
Finally, she lowered her voice.
“Last year, I made an investment outside our approved family-office structure.”
“How much?”
“Eight hundred thousand.”
My chest tightened.
“It failed?”
She nodded.
“Vanessa found out.”
“How?”
“She was helping Graham prepare documents for the wedding.”
I looked at Graham, standing near the window.
He immediately said, “I never gave her access to confidential family-office files.”
Margaret shook her head.
“She saw a statement in my study.”
Claire’s eyes narrowed.
“So Vanessa blackmailed you.”
“She didn’t call it that.”
“What did she call it?” I asked.
“A way to fix my mistake before you discovered it.”
My own mother had given Vanessa authority because she was terrified of looking irresponsible.
That changed what I believed about Margaret.
She had not planned Claire’s kidnapping.
But she had helped create the opportunity.
Detective Brooks entered thirty minutes later carrying a tablet.
“We checked the approval certificate.”
She looked at me.
“The electronic signature is genuine.”
Claire stared.
I felt cold.
Brooks continued.
“The authentication request came from your personal phone.”
“My phone was with me.”
“Do you ever leave it unlocked?”
“No.”
Ryan, standing behind me, suddenly looked away.
I saw it.
“Ryan.”
My brother rubbed one hand across his mouth.
“What?”
“Why did you just look at the floor?”
He didn’t answer.
“Ryan.”
His shoulders dropped.
“Three weeks ago, Vanessa asked to borrow your spare phone.”
Silence filled the room.
I stepped toward him.
“And you gave it to her?”
Ryan looked sick.

“She said she needed it for the wedding playlist.”
📖 Ryan thought he had handed Vanessa a harmless phone, but the device contained something far more dangerous than my electronic signature. 👇
