Chapter 3 - THE ROOM BELOW

“Daniel?”
The voice came again.
I knew it.
I had heard Claire angry, exhausted, laughing, crying and whispering beside Lily’s crib.
I had never heard her sound like that.
I ran toward the steel door.
It had no handle on my side.
Only an electronic keypad.
“Mason!” I shouted.
He climbed down slowly.
Too slowly.
“What’s the code?”
“I don’t know.”
“You installed this.”
“I supervised contractors.”
I slammed my hand against the door.
“Claire!”
A scraping sound answered.
Then three weak taps.
Ryan came down carrying a toolbox.
He looked at Mason.
“You designed the wine cellar renovation two years ago. You showed me these tunnels.”
Mason’s face changed.
That was all I needed.
I grabbed his jacket.
“What’s the code?”
“I swear I don’t know.”
Ryan shoved a pry bar between the frame and the concrete while I called 911.
The operator told us not to force anything if there might be structural danger.
Then Claire coughed behind the door.
I stopped listening.
Ryan and I pulled together.
The frame shifted.
Mason backed away.
On the third attempt, the old locking plate tore from the wall.
The door opened six inches.
Claire was lying on the floor.
For a second, I couldn’t move.
Her wrists were red and bruised.
Her hair was tangled.
There was dried blood beside one temple and a plastic water bottle near her hand.
She stared at me like she wasn’t certain I was real.
“Claire.”
I dropped beside her.
Her fingers caught my sleeve.
“Lily?”
“She’s safe.”
Claire closed her eyes.
A sob left her chest.
Paramedics came through the hatch minutes later.
While they examined her, Claire kept one hand wrapped around mine.
Then she saw Mason standing near the doorway.
Her entire body stiffened.
“Get him away from me.”
Mason raised both hands.
“Claire, I never—”
“Get him away!”
Ryan pushed Mason back.
Police arrived and separated everyone.
My mother came downstairs after Lily had been taken into the sitting room by my aunt.
Margaret stared at Claire in disbelief.
“What happened?”
Claire looked at me instead.
“Where’s Vanessa?”
“She ran.”
Claire’s breathing changed.
One paramedic told her not to speak.
Claire ignored him.
“Daniel, listen to me.”
“I’m listening.”
She gripped my wrist hard enough to hurt.
“This wasn’t about you marrying her.”
I leaned closer.
Claire’s eyes were filled with terror.
“It was about Lily.”
I felt my stomach turn.
“What about Lily?”
Claire swallowed.
“Don’t let Vanessa touch her trust.”
Then she lost consciousness.
Across the corridor, Mason lowered his eyes.
And for the first time, I understood that the room beneath my house was not the beginning of Vanessa’s plan.

It was what she had done when someone discovered it.
