Chapter 9 - THE STORY SHE SOLD

By the next morning, Vanessa’s version of events was already online.
I learned about it from my company’s communications director.
A celebrity news site had published photographs from our canceled wedding beside a headline accusing Claire and me of staging “a dramatic family dispute.”
Vanessa’s attorney released a statement.
She denied involvement in Claire’s confinement.
She claimed she fled because Ryan threatened her.
Then came the dangerous part.
She alleged Claire had been obsessed with preventing our marriage.
According to Vanessa, Claire entered the underground service area voluntarily after demanding money.
A video clip accompanied the article.
Claire appeared on camera walking toward the service corridor.
Alone.
No one dragging her.
No visible weapon.
The clip ended before she reached the hidden room.
My phone exploded with calls.
Board members.
Investors.
Reporters.
Margaret.
“What if there’s more footage?” my mother asked.
“Claire was sedated.”
“Not in that clip.”
I wanted to defend Claire instantly.
But I had promised myself something after the hallway.
I would stop believing whichever story hurt less.
I would follow facts.
Claire watched the video from her hospital room.
She didn’t look offended.
She looked confused.
“I don’t remember that hallway.”
Doctors had already told us the sedative could affect memory.
That uncertainty was exactly what Vanessa needed.
At Bennett Development, three directors requested an emergency board meeting.
One asked whether company resources had been used to confine Claire.
Another wanted to know why my electronic signature appeared on the trust transfer.
Everything Vanessa had prepared was converging.
The phone.
The keycard.
The deleted camera.
The hidden room beneath my home.
My name was attached to all of it.
Then our wedding photographer called.
“I may have something.”
She had set two cameras to record continuous background footage while photographing arrivals.
One pointed across the villa’s side garden.
It captured the service entrance.
Detective Brooks reviewed the original memory card that afternoon.
Claire appeared at 4:17 p.m.
But she was not alone.
Mason was behind her.
Vanessa was beside him.
Claire stumbled.
Mason caught her arm.
Vanessa pushed open the service door.
The public clip had been cropped.
The original showed three people.
Then, just before they disappeared inside, Claire turned toward Vanessa.
Even without audio, I could read the words on her lips.
You poisoned me.
I felt sick.
Brooks replayed it twice.
“This changes things.”
Then the image shifted.
A fourth figure appeared in the reflection of the glass door.
Watching them.
Someone wearing a dark suit.
May you like
Someone already inside my house.
📖 The unedited footage proved Claire was not alone, but identifying the silent witness would damage the only relationship I still thought I could trust. 👇
