Chapter 22 - THE CAMERA THAT WASN’T DEAD

The service corridor camera had appeared useless from the beginning.
An old maintenance unit mounted near the wine cellar.
No network connection.
No active feed.
Mason told police it had been dead for years.
He was wrong.
A technician removed it because the model sometimes stored emergency footage locally even after losing network access.
The internal memory chip was damaged.
Not empty.
Recovery took days.
When the first images appeared, Detective Brooks asked Claire and me to come to the station.
The footage had no sound.
The timestamp drifted by several minutes.
But the corridor was unmistakable.
Mason entered first.
He unlocked the storm-room door.
Vanessa appeared behind him.
Then Claire.
Barely walking.
Mason carried most of her weight.
Vanessa held Claire’s phone.
They put Claire inside.
The door shut.
I thought that would be the worst part.
It wasn’t.
Twenty minutes later, Vanessa returned alone.
She opened the door.
Entered.
Stayed four minutes.
When she came out, Claire’s silver necklace was in her hand.
The same necklace Lily later found in Vanessa’s clothes.
Claire covered her mouth.
That tiny object suddenly connected the entire opening nightmare.
Vanessa had not received it before Claire “left.”
She had taken it from Claire while Claire was imprisoned.
The footage then showed Vanessa typing something into Claire’s phone.
The departure message had been sent around that time.
Brooks checked the adjusted timestamp.
It aligned within minutes.
The old camera could not show what Vanessa typed.
But the Wi-Fi log already showed her tablet accessing Claire’s account.
Two independent records now supported the same event.
Vanessa’s attorney could attack either.
Attacking both would be harder.
Then the recovered footage advanced.
The following morning, Mason brought water.
The next evening, Graham appeared at the corridor entrance.
He did not enter.
He stood there for eleven seconds.
Then walked away.
His betrayal was visible.
So was his failure to intervene.
Claire whispered, “I remember his shoes.”
I felt rage rise.
Claire squeezed my hand.
“Don’t.”
She knew me too well.
The last recovered segment showed something none of us had known.
Vanessa kneeling near the ventilation duct.
She placed a small electronic device inside.
Then covered the grate.
Technicians returned to the villa.
Inside the duct, buried beneath dust, they found a miniature voice recorder.
Its battery was dead.
Its memory was intact.
Vanessa had apparently recorded Claire’s confinement.
Maybe for leverage.
Maybe for passwords.
Maybe because she trusted recordings more than people.
May you like
Whatever her reason, she had created the evidence herself.
📖 The corridor footage tied Vanessa to Claire’s imprisonment, but the hidden recorder contained the one conversation she never expected anyone else to hear. 👇
