Chapter 8 - THE MAN WHO BROUGHT WATER

Mason did not admit to kidnapping Claire.

He admitted to feeding her.

There was a difference, legally and morally, and he clung to it.

At the police station, with an attorney present, he gave a statement.

Vanessa had called him six nights earlier.

She told him Claire was having what she described as a “dangerous episode.”

“She said Claire was threatening to take Lily and disappear,” Detective Brooks told me afterward.

I stared at her.

“And Mason believed that?”

“He claims he did.”

Mason said Vanessa instructed him to open the old storm room beneath the villa because Claire needed somewhere private to calm down.

Then Vanessa arrived with Claire already sedated.

That was the point where his story stopped making sense.

“You don’t put an unconscious woman in a locked room because she needs privacy.”

Brooks agreed.

“But he says he panicked.”

“And then brought her water for six days?”

“He says Vanessa told him Claire would be released after the wedding.”

I laughed bitterly.

“Convenient.”

Mason surrendered his phone after prosecutors offered to consider cooperation.

Most of his messages with Vanessa had been deleted.

But cloud metadata remained.

Twenty-seven calls.

Fourteen messages.

Three location shares.

One location matched a service entrance behind my villa.

Another matched Claire’s house.

The third was an industrial storage facility owned by Bennett Development.

That frightened me.

Vanessa had never had a reason to go there.

Ryan and I drove with detectives to the facility.

Inside Mason’s assigned storage cage sat several boxes.

Wedding decorations.

Construction equipment.

Cleaning chemicals.

And a gray suitcase.

Claire identified it through a video call.

“That’s mine.”

Inside were clothes, toiletries and her passport.

Everything someone might pack if they wanted the world to believe Claire had left voluntarily.

Brooks photographed each item.

Then an officer pulled an airport parking receipt from a side pocket.

Timestamp: 7:56 p.m. the night Claire disappeared.

The receipt showed Vanessa’s vehicle entering the airport garage.

That explained Claire’s phone location.

Vanessa had taken Claire’s phone and suitcase to the airport.

She had staged an escape.

Mason looked worse with every discovery.

But the largest surprise came from a smaller object.

A keycard.

Bennett Development corporate access.

Registered to Ryan.

My brother stared at it.

“I lost that months ago.”

I turned toward him.

“You never told me.”

“I thought I misplaced it.”

Brooks scanned the card.

It had been used twice after Ryan reported privately replacing it.

Both entries were late at night.

Both accessed our records floor.

And one occurred forty-eight hours before the attempted transfer from Lily’s trust.

Ryan whispered, “Vanessa wasn’t just stealing money.”

I understood.

She had been building evidence.

📖 The keycard pointed toward corporate records, where Vanessa had planted the first pieces of a story that could make me look like Claire’s kidnapper. 👇
