Chapter 13 - THE BOARDROOM

Bennett Development’s board met without Claire, Lily or my mother.
Only executives, outside directors and attorneys.
I walked into the conference room knowing Vanessa’s plan had reached far beyond my wedding.
The chairman placed the forged trust documents on the table.
“Your authentication key was used.”
“I know.”
“Your estate manager confined your former wife in property you own.”
“I know.”
“Your family attorney notarized fraudulent documents.”
“I know.”
“And your mother authorized transfers to shell entities.”
I looked around the room.
“What exactly are you asking?”
“Whether Bennett Development can survive you remaining CEO while this is investigated.”
That hurt.
Not because the question was unfair.
Because it wasn’t.
Vanessa had built a structure where every road returned to me.
My phone.
My house.
My employee.
My family.
My money.
If I fought the board aggressively, I would appear desperate to maintain control.
If I stepped aside, I gave up the company my father built.
Claire’s words from the hospital returned to me.
Vanessa is using weaknesses.
Mine was control.
I closed the folder.
“I’ll take temporary leave.”
Several directors visibly relaxed.
The chairman nodded.
“We’ll appoint an interim CEO.”
“Who?”
“Ryan.”
I stared at my brother.
He looked equally surprised.
After the meeting, we stood alone.
“I didn’t ask for this,” Ryan said.
“I know.”
“Do you?”
The question stopped me.
Ryan had spent years being the second Bennett son.
Second choice.
Second signature.
Second seat.
Vanessa had exploited his carelessness, but maybe I had helped create it.
“I trust you,” I said.
Ryan looked away.
“I wish you had said that before someone used me to frame you.”
Another consequence.
Another relationship I had assumed would survive without attention.
That evening, Claire showed me a recovered voice memo from her phone’s cloud backup.
She had accidentally left the recorder running during part of her confrontation with Vanessa.
The audio was messy.
Car noise.
Fabric.
Claire’s breathing.
Then Vanessa’s voice.
“You keep acting like this is Lily’s money.”
“It is Lily’s money.”
“No. It’s Bennett money. Daniel controls it because everyone lets him.”
Claire answered, “And marrying him won’t make it yours.”
Vanessa laughed.
“Marriage isn’t the part that matters.”
The recording ended.
I played that line three times.
Marriage isn’t the part that matters.
I had assumed Vanessa wanted access as my wife.
What if the wedding was only camouflage?
What if her real plan required something else entirely?
Claire looked at me.
“She didn’t need to stay married to you.”
I understood the darker possibility.
May you like
“She just needed the wedding to happen.”
📖 Stepping away from my company cost me power, but Vanessa’s own voice revealed the wedding was only a deadline for something bigger. 👇
