Chapter 13 - The Missing Accountant

The accountant’s name was Marcus Reed.

He disappeared eight months earlier after questioning company payments.

Trevor told employees Marcus stole money and fled.

His family never believed it.

The blood in the warehouse proved he had been injured there.

Police searched the property again.

Behind a recently constructed wall, they found Marcus’s briefcase.

Inside were ledgers documenting years of fraud.

Trevor diverted client deposits into private accounts.

He bribed inspectors.

He used unsafe materials in luxury homes.

Several buildings may have structural defects.

Marcus had planned to expose him.

A security recording recovered from the warehouse showed Trevor attacking Marcus with a metal tool.

The footage ended before Marcus left the frame.

His body had not been found.

Trevor now faced possible murder charges.

Richard reviewed the construction records.

One compromised property was Rebecca’s home.

The foundation contained serious defects.

Trevor had built the house as a wedding gift.

He told Rebecca no expense had been spared.

In reality, he used inferior materials and insured the property for far more than its value.

Investigators suspected he planned an accidental fire or collapse.

Rebecca remembered Trevor insisting she and Emma remain home during certain repairs.

She also remembered smelling gas one night.

The luxury home had never been a symbol of love.

It was another trap.

Engineers evacuated the property immediately.
