Chapter 6 - The Missing Embryos
Rebecca called the fertility clinic immediately.
The administrator refused to discuss details by phone.
Richard’s attorneys obtained an emergency court order the next morning.
Clinic records showed that two embryos had been released six months earlier.
The authorization carried Rebecca’s signature.
Again, it was forged.
Trevor had presented a notarized consent form.
The notary worked for Hayes Construction.
Rebecca felt sick.
“Where were they taken?”
The clinic director looked ashamed.
“To a private reproductive center in another state.”
“Who received them?”
The center listed Olivia Grant as the intended surrogate.
Rebecca stared at the report.
Trevor had stolen embryos created from Rebecca’s eggs and his genetic material.
He intended to have another child without her knowledge.
Richard’s attorney explained the potential motive.
“If Rebecca died, Trevor could claim control of the Lawson trust through the children.”
Rebecca looked at Emma.
“And if the baby I’m carrying survived?”
“He might seek custody.”
Every part of her life had become a financial strategy.
The marriage.
The pregnancies.
The house.
Even her children.
Detective Ortiz obtained a warrant for Olivia’s property.
Olivia was not there.
Neither was Trevor.
The black case remained in the kitchen.
Inside were medications, fake identification documents, and copies of Emma’s birth certificate.
There was also a passport application containing Emma’s photograph.
Trevor planned to leave the country with her.
Police issued an alert.
Then Rebecca’s hospital phone rang.
Trevor’s voice came through.
“You should have kept your father out of our marriage.”
“Where are you?”
“Somewhere you will never find me.”
Rebecca heard a child crying in the background.
