Chapter 29 - Emma Opens the Door

Years passed.

Emma turned seven.

She remembered little about Trevor’s face but remembered the sound of knocking.

On the anniversary of Richard’s visit, she asked Rebecca to tell the whole story.

Rebecca explained in age-appropriate words.

“Your father hurt me. Grandpa came. I opened the door and told the truth.”

Emma sat quietly.

“Did I save you?”

Rebecca smiled sadly.

“You gave me courage.”

“Did Grandpa save us?”

“He helped.”

“Who saved us most?”

Rebecca considered the question.

“Many people helped. But I had to choose to open the door.”

Emma nodded.

At the Red Door Center, she volunteered to organize toys.

One afternoon, a new child refused to enter.

The girl stood outside clutching a stuffed rabbit.

Emma opened the door wider.

“My mom says you can be scared and still come inside.”

The child stepped across the threshold.

Rebecca watched from the hallway.

Her daughter had once cried in her arms while Trevor demanded silence.

Now Emma used her voice to offer safety.

Richard stood beside Rebecca.

“She is like you.”

Rebecca shook her head.

“She is becoming herself.”

That distinction mattered.

Her children would not inherit Trevor’s violence or Rebecca’s silence as destiny.

They would inherit choices.
