Chapter 24 - Danielle Comes Home
Danielle moved back to the state with her son, Caleb.
She had spent thirteen years hiding from Trevor.
Now she wanted to live without checking every car behind her.
Rebecca invited them to dinner.
The first meeting felt awkward.
Their children shared a father whose violence shaped their lives differently.
Caleb was angry.
“He never came to my games.”
Emma did not understand.
“Daddy lived with us.”
Caleb looked away.
Rebecca intervened gently.
“Trevor made choices that hurt both of you. Neither of you received something the other stole.”
Caleb nodded slowly.
Richard offered to support his education through a victim-compensation fund.
Danielle refused personal charity but accepted assistance owed through Trevor’s seized assets.
The distinction protected her dignity.
Over time, Caleb became protective of Emma and Matthew.
He visited the advocacy center while it was under construction.
One wall displayed children’s drawings of safe homes.
Caleb added a picture of a house with many windows.
“No locked rooms,” he explained.
Danielle watched him and cried.
Rebecca held her hand.
They were not sisters.
They did not need to call each other family.
