Chapter 23 - The House Is Demolished

The luxury home could not be repaired safely.
Its foundation, electrical system, and gas lines had all been compromised.
Rebecca chose demolition.
She stood across the street with Richard and Emma as machinery tore into the living room.
The front door fell first.
Emma covered her ears.
Rebecca held her.
The hardwood floor where Trevor struck her broke beneath the excavator.
For a moment, Rebecca expected grief.
Instead, she felt air enter her lungs more easily.
Richard asked whether she wanted to keep anything.
Rebecca had already removed Emma’s baby photographs and a wooden growth chart from the kitchen.
Nothing else mattered.
The land still belonged to the Lawson trust.
Rebecca decided to rebuild.
Not another mansion.
A family advocacy center.
It would contain emergency apartments, legal offices, childcare, and financial counseling for survivors.
Richard offered to finance everything.
Rebecca set a boundary.
“You can contribute. You do not control it.”
He nodded.
“Understood.”
The new building would include reinforced security and a red front door.
Emma chose the color.
“Why red?” Richard asked.
“So Mommy can always find it.”
Rebecca smiled.

The old house had trapped her behind an expensive door.
The new one would open for people who had nowhere safe to go.
