Chapter 25 - Richard Learns to Knock
Rebecca moved into a smaller home near the advocacy center.
Richard visited often.
But he no longer entered without permission.
He knocked.
He waited.
He asked before offering advice.
One afternoon, Rebecca found him teaching Emma how to plant tomatoes.
He had purchased expensive gardening equipment.
Emma preferred digging with a plastic spoon.
Richard followed her instructions.
Rebecca watched from the porch.
Her relationship with her father did not return to what it had been.
It became something more honest.
He attended counseling with her.
He admitted that wealth had made him believe solving problems was the same as understanding people.
“You taught me to value strength,” Rebecca said. “But you made vulnerability feel like failure.”
Richard nodded.
“That made it easier for Trevor to hide what he did.”
Rebecca did not comfort him.
He learned to sit with responsibility.
When Matthew came home from neonatal care, Richard visited for twenty minutes and left before Rebecca became overwhelmed.
At the door, he asked, “Do you need anything?”
She almost said no automatically.
Then she answered truthfully.
“Sleep.”
Richard smiled.
“I can hold him.”
Rebecca placed Matthew in his arms.
