Chapter 22 - The Verdict
The jury deliberated for four days.
Trevor was convicted of murder, kidnapping, aggravated domestic assault, fraud, conspiracy, attempted child trafficking, insurance fraud, and obstruction.
He showed no reaction until the murder verdict.
Then he leaned toward his attorney.
“This is Rebecca’s fault.”
She heard him.
For the first time, the sentence had no power over her.
Cynthia was convicted on fraud and conspiracy charges but received reduced sentencing for cooperation.
Dr. Clark lost his medical license and received twelve years.
Margaret Stone received forty years for child trafficking and illegal adoptions.
Olivia pleaded guilty to kidnapping and fraud.
Her cooperation reduced, but did not remove, her prison sentence.
The clinic executives responsible for releasing the embryos were charged separately.
Families connected to the fraudulent adoptions began a long legal process.
Some children remained with adoptive parents who had acted in good faith.
Others were reunited with biological relatives.
The truth did not create simple endings.
It created informed choices.
At Trevor’s sentencing, Rebecca spoke directly to him.
“You told me I made you hurt me.”
She held Emma’s hand.
“You told our daughter through your actions that love meant fear.”
She looked toward Matthew, sleeping in Richard’s arms.
