PART 11

Outside, the QRF vehicle engine roared.

Marines loaded ammunition, slammed doors, and cursed into radios.

Vance saw me climbing into the rear seat with my plate carrier already strapped tight.

“Jennings!” he snapped. “You are not going.”

“Miller’s boys are bleeding.”

“That is an order.”

I looked him dead in the face.

“Then put it in writing while I’m saving them.”

For one second, nobody moved.

Then the driver hit the gas.

And the nurse they thought they knew rode straight into the canyon meant to kill them all.

The road to Checkpoint Charlie cut between two high rock walls.

Bad country.

Narrow turns.

No clean exit.

Perfect place for an ambush if someone knew the timing.

They knew.
