On my last morning, Miller appeared at the tent flap with two coffees.
“Still outrank my mood?” he asked.
“Always.”
He handed me one.
“Those boys are alive because of you.”
“They’re alive because they moved when it mattered.”
He looked at me for a long second.
“You ever get tired of people underestimating you?”
I sipped the coffee.
“Sometimes.”
“What do you do about it?”
I glanced toward the ridgelines, where the sun was rising over old dust and new ghosts.
“I let them.”
Miller frowned.
“Why?”
“Because when they finally learn the truth, they never forget it.”
He laughed softly.
Then he saluted me.
Not as a joke.
