I returned the salute.

By noon, another helicopter carried me out of Restitution.

Below, Echo Company stood in formation near the landing zone.

Briggs waved with his good arm.

Weston raised two fingers from his wheelchair.

Miller stood still, coffee in hand, pretending the dust in his eyes was from the rotor wash.

Maybe it was.

Maybe it wasn’t.

As the base disappeared beneath us, I looked down at the valley that had almost swallowed them.

The Marines thought I came there to save lives with bandages and morphine.

They were not wrong.

They just didn’t know I had other tools.

And when the canyon turned into a killing box, when the sniper fell, when the captain froze, when everyone expected the nurse to run—

I picked up the rifle.

And Echo Company lived.
