Miller raised his coffee cup.

“To Doc.”

Weston lifted a plastic water bottle.

“To Commander Doc.”

Briggs swallowed hard.

“To not dying.”

One by one, the Marines lifted their cups.

Not because I was a legend.

Not because I had picked up a rifle.

Because in that canyon, everyone had learned something.

The quiet nurse was not harmless.

The loud captain was not honorable.

And courage did not always arrive wearing the label men expected.

Two weeks later, Echo Company shipped out of Restitution.

The Engineer talked.

The network broke.
