I dropped beside him and shoved gauze into his hands.
“Tyler, look at me.”
He did.
The boy was gone.
A Marine was staring back.
“Press harder,” I said. “Do not let go.”
He nodded, tears cutting tracks through the dust on his face.
“Please don’t die,” he whispered.
“Wasn’t on my schedule.”
I moved to the wounded Marine.
Tourniquet.
Pressure.
Airway.
Morphine.
Mark the time.
Gunfire snapped above my shoulder.
