That night, the mess hall was quiet.
Briggs sat across from me with his arm in a sling.
“I called you sweetheart,” he said.
“You did.”
“I was an idiot.”
“You were nineteen.”
“I’m still nineteen.”
“Then there’s hope.”
He smiled weakly.
“Are you really a SEAL?”
The entire table went still.
Miller looked into his coffee.
Weston, fresh from surgery and high on pain medication, had somehow convinced a corpsman to wheel him in.
“Ask her about the optic,” he mumbled.
I looked at the Marines around me.
Their faces were bruised, burned, exhausted.
