Ten minutes later, Weston loosened the mount.

The turret clicked clean.

He did not speak to me for two days.

Men processed humiliation at different speeds.

By the end of August, the valley changed.

Locals stopped coming to the clinic.

No children with fevers.

No old men asking for blood pressure pills.

No herders moving goats past the wire.

Just empty roads.

Empty hills.

And an American flag snapping above the command post like it was trying to warn us.
