I pulled my encrypted tablet from my bag and opened the file I had been building for three weeks.
“Three route changes. Three ambushes. Same unsecured contact. Same private security liaison. Same payments routed through a shell account tied to your brother-in-law.”
His face changed.
Not much.
Just enough.
Miller saw it.
So did every Marine in the yard.
Vance whispered, “You were spying on me.”
“No,” I said. “I was listening. You just talked too loudly.”
Two military police officers moved in behind him.
Vance looked around for someone to save him.
Nobody moved.
Miller stepped close enough for Vance to hear.
“You put my boys in that canyon.”
Vance’s voice broke.
“I didn’t know they’d hit that patrol.”
I stared at him.
“That’s the thing about selling secrets, Captain. You don’t get to choose who dies from them.”
