We evacuated six wounded Marines.

Weston was last onto the bird.
As they lifted him, he grabbed my sleeve.
“Doc,” he whispered, “you were a SEAL?”
I leaned close.
“I was a lot of paperwork.”
He blinked.
Then laughed until the medic told him to shut up.
Back at Restitution, the entire base watched us roll in.
Captain Vance stood outside the command post, face pale, sunglasses gone.
He looked at the rifle in my hands.
Then at the men behind me.
Then at the black helicopter landing beyond the wire.
My commanding officer stepped out.
