“You know that platform?”

I looked at him.

“I know a few things.”

His hand loosened on the rifle.

“Don’t scratch her.”

I took the M110.

And the canyon went strange around me.

Sound narrowed.

Dust became distance.

Fear became math.

Wind.

Elevation.

Angle.

Heat shimmer.

Enemy position.

Two shooters on the left ridge.

One on the cutback.

A spotter near the dry creek bed.

And farther back, beneath a torn gray scarf, a man watching through binoculars.

The Engineer.

I had seen his face once before in a clinic doorway.

He had pretended to bring his nephew for fever medicine.
