PART 9

At 0540, Echo Company rolled toward Checkpoint Charlie.
Three armored vehicles.
Twenty-two Marines.
One routine patrol.
Captain Vance stood by the gate with his arms crossed, watching them leave.
Miller climbed into the second vehicle, then leaned out.
“Doc, keep my coffee warm.”
“Don’t make me waste good medical supplies on you.”
“Cold woman.”
“Hydrated woman.”
He laughed and slapped the door.
Weston sat in the lead vehicle with his rifle across his knees.
“Try not to miss me, Doc.”
“Try not to need me, Corporal.”
The convoy rolled out.
Dust rose behind the tires.
