The lead vehicle burned at the mouth of the canyon.
Black smoke twisted into the white sky.
Rounds cracked from the ridgeline.
Rock dust burst against the ground near our tires.
The driver swore and slammed us behind a broken wall.
I jumped out before the vehicle fully stopped.
“Doc!” someone yelled.
I ran low, bag tight against my ribs.
The sound of gunfire in a canyon is different.
It does not pass you.
It surrounds you.
It turns the air into teeth.
I reached Briggs first.
The same kid who had called me sweetheart was pressed behind a tire, both hands clamped over another Marine’s leg.
