His name was Lance Corporal Tyler Briggs.
Nineteen years old.
Six feet tall.
Built like a linebacker.
And still dumb enough to believe a Navy nurse needed protection from war.
He walked into my aid station one hot August morning with a busted knuckle and a grin.
“Careful, Doc,” he said. “You keep being nice to us, somebody’s gonna fall in love.”
I snapped on blue gloves and looked at his hand.
“You punched a steel ammo crate.”
“It disrespected me.”
“The crate won.”
The other Marines laughed from the doorway.
