“Lieutenant Commander Jennings,” she said, loud enough for everyone to hear. “Status?”
The base went silent.
Lieutenant Commander.
Not Lieutenant.
Vance’s mouth opened.
“Commander?”
I handed Weston’s rifle to an armorer.
“Engineer captured alive. Remote detonator recovered. Echo Company extracted. Six wounded. No KIA.”
Marrow nodded once.
“Good work.”
Vance stepped forward.
“This is my base. I demand to know what operation is being conducted here.”
Captain Marrow turned to him.
“You leaked patrol routes to a contractor channel compromised by the Engineer’s network.”
The words hit harder than artillery.
