Chapter 1 - Where Is My Bed?
Noah’s bedroom disappeared while he was at school.
Caroline stopped in the doorway so suddenly that her seven-year-old son walked into her back.
His blue race-car bed was gone.
So were the dinosaur curtains, the wooden bookshelf Daniel had assembled before Noah was born, and the glow-in-the-dark stars Caroline had placed across the ceiling one careful piece at a time.
In their place stood white display cabinets filled with designer handbags.
Burgundy dresses hung from polished brass rails.
Dozens of high heels lined the wall where Noah’s drawings had once been taped.
Madison stood in the center of the room wearing a satin dress and arranging silk scarves by color.
She barely looked up.
“Daniel said this room is mine now.”
Noah tightened both arms around his teddy bear.
“Mom,” he whispered, “where’s my bed?”
Caroline felt something inside her fracture.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
It simply broke cleanly enough that she could finally see through it.
She took out her phone and photographed everything.
The shoe shelves.
The garment racks.
The empty space where her son had slept.
Madison gave a smug smile.
“Daniel thought you might be emotional.”
Caroline lowered the phone.
“I understand.”
Madison mistook the calmness for surrender.
She did not understand that Caroline had spent eleven years begging for honesty, respect, and basic kindness.
She was done begging.
Thirty minutes later, Caroline placed two packed suitcases by the front door.
She laid her wedding ring on Daniel’s pillow.
Beneath it, she left signed divorce papers prepared months earlier but never filed.
Then she took Noah’s hand.
“We’re going home, sweetheart.”
Noah looked up at her.
“Will Dad come?”
Caroline opened the door.
“I don’t know.”
She did know one thing.
